Let's say you like the sound of a particular guitarist, but you don't know which guitar he is using or you perhaps like how the guitar in a particular song sounds, but you don't know which guitar the song has been recorded with. In other words you have your favorite guitar sound. That's one of the most important things to have, when buying a guitar, besides money of course.
Once you have both you are ready to visit a well supplied guitar store. Remember, well supplied! This is really important, because in a small store the choice is small, so you have little to compare to and little to choose from, which is bad. It is good to have a great choice of products of the available price range in front of you when buying one, so you don't buy the best they have, but the best that exists.
What you should pay attention to!
First of all it is good to be capable of playing at least one song well before you go trying out guitars to the store, because else more problems can occur. Firstly, salesmen might make fun of you and secondly, you won't be able to get the proper sound out of it. In such situation you should, therefore, ask somebody more experienced to come along and try out the guitars for you and after all to advise you as well.
If you don't have an expert with you, then you should pay attention to the following:
As you take the guitar into your hands it is very important that you feel comfortable with it. Of course you should not expect it to be as comfortable as if it were the guitar you’ve been playing for years, but what should you expect is that there’s nothing that really disturbs you. You should always try to imagine yourself playing on this particular instrument for hours, whether in standing or sitting position, well in whatever circumstances.
What you want to proceed with is called sound-check, but when doing this, be aware that not each and every guitar is compatible with every amplifier, so to say. There are some combinations that turn out miserable, although they both, the guitar and the amplifier work just fine separately.
Therefore you should take care about this, at least as much that you won't end up trying to put a dog and a cat together. And don’t forget to tune the guitar, of course. Speaking of tuning you may want to check whether the guitar is in tune everywhere on the fretboard. If it is not, there must be something wrong either with bridge setting or with neck itself. The first problem can be solved within a few minutes, while the latter means just keep away from the guitar. You never know what it will take to fix it up.
And after all you should get attracted by the guitars look too. This is not the most important thing, but would you enjoy playing an instrument that looks ugly. It depends on you actually and on whether you have already decided about the model you are going to buy. In such case you can only choose the color.
